Like most people, I like to own something lasting that I made with my own hands. Something that’s useful and practical. To achieve this goal, woodworking seems like a natural answer because a chair or table is something that you can appreciate, and have practical value also. It can satisfy your need to do something creative.

My woodworking idea was to build a table for my patio so I looked for some patio furniture plans. I’m a bit new to this so it’s a good thing I found Ted’s Woodworking site online.

Ted McGrath created this collection of over 16,000 woodwork plans and woodworking patterns. He’s a professional woodworker and a member of the AWI, so his work is credible to me because he’s not just a hobbyist but a master craftsman. It took him two years to put this woodwork project package together, and he says it’s the most comprehensive one you can find online today.

Is Ted’s Woodworking package worth the money?
New woodworkers will benefit from this package. The woodworking plans are clear and it’s easy to read the dimensions on the different drawings. This is something that a beginner like me can appreciate, because it makes it easier to follow the instructions. You can get free woodworking patterns, but they’re printed on small scripts that are hard to decipher most of the time.

There are some furniture patio plans that look specially designed for seasoned woodworking pros. That’s a good thing too because I’m planning to go into more complex woodwork projects as my carpentry skills increase. This is useful for beginners because it shows carpentry tips on say, making sure your edges are square, or how to make your dovetails fit snugly.

The only drawback I found is with the size of the package, it may take you a while to download the whole thing if you have a slow Internet connection. If that’s the case, you may want to upgrade to the DVD edition. You can do this at the members’ area.
Also, the members’ area can be a bit overwhelming at first, because of the huge number of plans and drawings. But they’re organized by categories so it becomes easy once you’ve familiarized yourself.

All in all, Ted’s Woodworking package is very comprehensive, especially the patio furniture plans section. It will have a solution for any woodwork project you would want to undertake.

Somebody who likes to get his hands busy building outdoor furniture. Things like garden furniture sets, or maybe an outdoor sofa. It’s a lot of fun but you can also spend way too much money if you’re not careful. And some results won’t exactly win you any patio decor design contest.

Reminds me of the first time I got hooked into carpentry. I saw a patio furniture table from an ad and wanted to build one exactly like it for my mom’s backyard. I bought some wood, screws, some other bric-a-brac and started right in. Four hours later, I knew I was in over my head because I didn’t have a patio furniture plan.

Building that picnic table seemed so straight forward. I used a miter box to make the cross support legs, but it took me a lot of attempts before I got it right. That’s when I discovered angles can be a bit hot to handle. Turned out I spent almost the same amount of money making that table as buying it in the first place… and I put in two weekends in the bargain!

Those nooks and crannies can be really challenging. It took me a while to realize that a great picnic table plan would’ve made my work a lot easier. Somebody should have also given me advice to treat the wood first before starting anything.
